It is best to book your flight directly to Heraklion (Iraklion), Crete. You can fly directly to Heraklion from many European cities by charter flights or regular flights with Lufthansa from Frankfurt, for example. Therefore, participants from overseas (USA, Canada) who do not want to change airports in Athens may fly directly to Heraklion through Germany or other European cities. If you fly directly to Athens and then to Heraklion, you must change airports in Athens. A taxi from the International Airport to the Domestic Airport will cost around 2500 Drachmas ($8). There is also a city bus, which is less expensive.
Several flights connect Athens and Heraklion on a daily basis.
Heraklion can be reached also by boat from Piraeus daily (departure at 6 p.m. and arrival at 6 a.m. the next morning).
Georgia Houpis, CTS Travel, has offered to obtain the lowest possible price for US and Canadian participants in our NATO ASI. For interested participants contact Ms. Houpis directly at

A partial map showing the distance from Heraklion to the Creta Maris Hotel located in Hersonissos (viewed better via Internet Explorer) is included. It is approximately 1/2-hour from the airport to the hotel. Taxies are available for about 6,000 Drachmas. You can share expenses by riding with other participants. Check the Lodging List for those who have supplied their arrival times.
Please note that we have tried to make reservations for you as your registration form requested or later e-mail communications. The hotel is based on double occupancy and include room and board, breakfast, and lunch or dinner. It is suggested that participants choose breakfast and dinner as the two meals to be covered by this price. This is a special rate given to the ASI and is considerably less than commercially available rates. You are responsible for paying extra expenses such as telephone calls or room service.
Your $150 registration fee guarantees your presence at the ASI and pays for the welcoming reception, a conference dinner, and the refreshments served during breaks. Guests are requested to pay $50 to defray the costs of the welcoming reception and the conference dinner.
If your hotel dates change, please contact the Conference Secretary and not the hotel. The rates we quoted you are special rates, because we guaranteed a specific number of rooms. Because of the number of participants/observers, we have included two more hotels. Click here to see your hotel accommodations and arrival/departure dates.
The ASI starts Monday, June 19, 2000 at 9:00 a.m. and ends Thursday, June 29 at 8:00 p.m.
You should plan to arrive by Sunday evening, June 18. There will be a welcoming reception and registration at the Creta Maris Hotel at 8 p.m. Sunday night.
The conference organizers as well as NATO disclaim all responsibility toward travel, accident, or health insurance. Participants should make their own arrangements.
Bring two camera-ready manuscripts with you to the conference and an original set of figures. Your paper will be refereed and edited at the conference site and, if accepted, it will be published in the conference proceedings.
There will be two evening poster sessions: Tuesday, June 20 and Monday, June 26. We will have the lists of the presenters for each of these evenings at the conference. The maximum poster size should be 32 inches (wide) X 39 inches (tall). We will have poster pins and white tack to attach the posters to the poster board. You may bring them laminated into one poster or assemble them on the board.
